In an aside, he says the accusation which has become so popular among right-wing Jews that Jewish critics of Zionism are "self-haters" was first used by the journalist Theodor Lessing in the 1930s. "In a discussion on Israeli TV some reactionary once asked me 'Are you one of those self-haters?'. I replied 'No, I don't hate myself. I just hate Jews like you'. Of course you could never say that on a TV programme in any other country," he laughs.
